As Australia heads into the upcoming Federal Budget, the team at Acacia Energy is hopeful the Government will take the next logical step in supporting Australian businesses through energy transition and productivity reform.
Commercial and industrial (C&I) battery energy storage systems (BESS) are rapidly becoming critical infrastructure for Australian industry. Beyond reducing electricity costs, batteries help businesses manage peak demand, improve resilience, participate in energy markets, and support grid stability as Australia's energy system evolves.
Recent announcements around making the $20,000 instant asset write-off permanent for small businesses are a positive signal that productivity-enhancing investment remains on the national agenda.
However, large-scale behind-the-meter battery systems remain capital-intensive projects that often fall outside existing instant asset write-off thresholds. Acacia Energy believes there is a significant opportunity in this Budget to unlock private sector investment by extending accelerated depreciation or instant asset write-off measures specifically to BESS infrastructure.
Doing so would:
Accelerate industrial electrification and energy resilience
Reduce pressure on the electricity grid during peak periods
Improve competitiveness for Australian manufacturers and industry
Encourage faster adoption of flexible energy infrastructure
Support emissions reduction without relying solely on direct government spending
Importantly, BESS projects are not simply an environmental investment — they are increasingly a productivity investment. Businesses equipped with flexible energy infrastructure are better positioned to manage volatility, participate in emerging energy markets, and remain globally competitive.
Australia has an opportunity to become a leader in commercial energy flexibility. Targeted tax incentives for battery storage could help accelerate that transition while stimulating immediate private capital deployment across the economy.
At Acacia Energy, we are hopeful this year's Budget recognises the strategic role Commercial and Industrial Scale battery storage can play in strengthening Australian industry for the decades ahead.
